About Team GB




Team GB is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team.

Every two years the Team represents Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the summer or winter Olympic Games.The Team is selected by the British Olympic Association, in conjunction with the governing bodies of Olympic sports, from the best sportsmen and women to compete in 26 summer and 7 winter Olympic sports at the greatest sporting event in the world.

The sportsmen and women who are selected to participate for GB at the Olympic Games become members of the Great Britain Olympic Team, Team GB. There is only one Olympic team from Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Team GB. There is not an Olympic bobsleigh team or Olympic skiing team. The individual sports join to become Team GB, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team.

In Vancouver, Team GB is expected to consist of approximately 50 athletes across six sports (biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, luge, skating and skiing) and 11 disciplines (biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton, curling, luge, figure skating, short track speed skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboard). Click here to view biographies of athletes selected to Team GB.

Team GB’s most successful Olympic Winter Games was Chamonix 1924, winning four medals, including gold in men’s curling, silver in the men’s four-man bobsleigh event and bronze in the men’s ice hockey competition and for Ethel Muckelt in women’s figure skating. At the last Olympic Winter Games in Turin 2006, Shelley Rudman was Team GB’s sole medallist with silver in the women’s skeleton. Team GB’s last gold medal was won by the women’s curlers, led by skip Rhona Martin, at Salt Lake City 2002.
