Fiona Hughes has been selected to represent Team GB in cross-country skiing at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The Vancouver Games will be Hughes's first Olympic Winter Games.
Hughes was inspired to take up cross-country skiing by parents who both excelled at the sport.
She is one day older than team-mate Andrew Musgrave, so will also be celebrating her 20th birthday shortly after the Closing Ceremony – another sign of the seam of youth that goes through the cross-country team.
Hughes's first victory in an international even came in the Junior championship race in Bruksvallarna at the end of 2009. It’s a far cry from her first go on skis when, at the age of eight, her mother told her “just steer clear of the trees”. She promptly skied straight into one.
